Examination Scoring
Updated March 1, 2008
In 2007, the AEA Aquatic Fitness Professional Certification course introduced a revised Examination. For the initial year, the passing score was set at 65%, which is comparable to the scoring system used in high school and college level course tests. With this passing score, 510 of the total 654 US Exam Candidates successfully completed the examination process (82% of candidates passed).
To confirm that the 65% passing score was appropriate to continue in 2008, two separate evaluations were completed. First, the percentage of Exam Candidates who successfully completed the AEA Certification process was compared with the pass rates for other fitness instructor certification examinations in the industry. Based upon available information, it was found that the typical pass rate was somewhat lower than that of AEA’s 2007 Certification (approximately 75% as compared to 82%).
Second, the Certification Education Council carefully considered the performance level necessary to be confident in the knowledge base of the aquatic professionals certified by the AEA Aquatic Fitness Professional Examination. An aquatic fitness professional will encounter a very diverse population of participants (both in age and ability) as well as the additional safety concerns found in an aquatic environment.
Taking into account these two areas of concern, the Aquatic Exercise Association adjusted the passing score of the Aquatic Fitness Professional Certification Examination to 68% for the 2008 calendar year. This adjustment to a slightly higher passing score will result in approximately 75% of all Examination Candidates passing the examination on the first attempt.
