AEA Certification Renewal Policy & Procedures
AEA Certified Fitness Professionals are required to renew their certification every two years. Certification and Membership are two different renewal processes with separate fees! This information is specific to your Certification Renewal only. For Membership renewal information, please go to Membership menu or visit AKWA Shop.
- AEA Certified Fitness Professionals are required to renew their certification every two years.
- AEA Certified Professionals need to obtain a minimum of 15 CECs to maintain their AEA Certification.
- A minimum of 7.5 CECs MUST be earned through Aquatic Exercise/Fitness Specific Courses, and or Exercise Sciences, including Anatomy, Physiology and Kinesiology. A maximum of 7.5 CECs of the minimum required 15 CECs can be earned in related areas such as Safety, Health and Wellness, Nutrition, Management, and Land Fitness Training, and or related fields of approved education. If you earn more CECs than the requirement, they do not carry over to the next renewal period.
- AEA Certified Professionals must maintain a current and valid CPR card in order for their Certification to remain valid. CPR is now worth 2 AEA CECs.
- There is a $50.00 Certification Renewal Fee. This fee represents on-time renewals that are received prior to the expiration date and with complete requirements fulfilled.
- Certified Instructors have 60 days grace following their certification expiration date, in order to renew without paying a late fee.
Extension Information for your Certification Renewal
You can renew your certification up to 60 days past your certification expiration date. If you cannot renew within the 60 day windown you would need to apply for an extension. If you require an extension because you do not have enough CECs, there is a $25.00 Extension Fee and it must be submitted in writing. Upon receipt, AEA will grant a 6 month extension to your current expiration. No additional late fees would apply if renewal documents are submitted before the expiration date of extension, just the $50 renewal fee. Please contact AEA directly for more information on Certification Renewal Extension.
