IAFC 2013
Discover a NEW L’Attitude

Yes, registration will open soon, but of course we are just a few weeks behind schedule as this is a NEW L’Attitude Event! Blame it on the moon, blame it on the boogie, blame it on whatever you want, but the fact is this IAFC is all new – new everything. Being at the same location for the past six years allowed for a more cookie cutter approach to prep – not so much this year. From the welcome IAFC BBQ with live music and golf putting contests to the grand finale secret master classes, something fresh and exciting will happen each and every day!

New Location   The Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida, plays host to IAFC this year. Innisbrook has four championship golf courses, a spa, three restaurants and a large conference facility. Sounds nice huh? It is nice! I was there last July. You are going to love the accommodations – sweet suites (for those who book early). Nestled away in nature, this resort provides a laid back Florida experience away from the hubbub. Laid back not your thing? There is a really fun indoor & outdoor bar/restaurant onsite, the Osprey Sports Bar, which features great food at reasonable prices. They have live music on Friday and Saturday nights. There are other dining options onsite as well.

New Schedule   IAFC regulars will notice some differences when selecting sessions. We will be using four pools instead of two and the conference center is bigger - that means more variety in session offerings. We look forward to welcoming new presenters, new vendors and of course new attendees. I wish I could tell you more but Angie is still working on the final schedule and won’t show it to me. Like I might blab details or something?

Whether you choose the highly acclaimed Indaba Spa for pampering, or simply take time to appreciate the property, which is a nature-lover’s paradise, the tranquil setting of Innisbrook Resort makes this the perfect choice for IAFC, as attendees can relax and unwind after a full day of classes. Bring your binoculars to view the fledgling ospreys in their nests and appreciate The General, the resident alligator as he basks in the sunshine. Take a walk on the wild side through the scenic nature preserve to learn more about the beauty of Florida. Experience the wide selection of services at the spa to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul. “Indaba” means “gathering” in Zulu, the language of one of the oldest indigenous South African people...you are sure to see many fellow attendees being renewed and refreshed.

New Fun Place  Tarpon Springs, home to the historic Sponge Docks, is just a few short minutes away. The sponge industry helped build a Greek community that is now famous, not only for the worlds finest sponges, but for some of the finest Greek restaurants, markets, and bakeries in the USA. What will you find in Tarpon Springs? The Sponge Docks, Greek restaurants, bakeries, attractions, natural sponges, sponge diving, tours, sightseeing cruises, lots of shopping and live entertainment. How fun is that? And, Angie moved the IAFC party to Thursday night so that delegates could enjoy the Street Festival on Friday night at the docks!

IAFC 2013 is just too NEW to miss this year!

AEA WEEKEND EVENTS
New 2013 AEA Workshops Debuting

The AEA Weekend Event Calendar is back in action in 2013 – new events and new workshops.  Two new AEA workshops are on the docket this spring. Check them out.

Boot Camp Deep
Take your boot camp to the deep and experience suspended training with a high intensity, non-choreographed workout. Learn how to employ a variety of body positions (vertical, horizontal and diagonal), as well as specific training drills that utilize the pool wall. Command attention in your deep-water classes with challenging formats geared for advanced training.
Look for this program in the following states this spring: CO, MA, PA, OR, WA and WI.

H2O Body Sculpting & Resistance Training
Add resistance, through the use of equipment and body positions, to create a shallow-water fitness program that targets muscular strength & endurance, range of motion and balance skills. Learn how to effectively integrate both impacting and grounded techniques to accommodate various fitness levels, as well as different pool considerations, such as water depth and temperature! This high-powered workout explores another level of training with controlled resistance.
Look for this program in the following states this spring: IA, PA and WI.

SUPER HOSTS
Reaping the Benefits of Hosting

The Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) has been offering onsite education for 29 years. AEA schedules over 60 weekend events each year, showcasing a variety of educational programs. AEA has 13 three-hour programs that cover a wide range of formats, including boot camp, cardio, choreography, circuit, core, deep water, interval, kickboxing, older adult, resistance training and more. AEA also offers day long extended affiliate programs, including Aqua Stretch™, Aqua Pi-Yo-Chi™, Aquatic Options and, coming soon, Personal Pool Programming that will feature workshops and online education geared towards personal and small group training in the water. For detailed information on all AEA workshops and affiliate education visit
AEA Education at the AEA website.

Countless facilities have brought AEA certification and education to their facilities, elevating the quality of aquatic fitness worldwide. Perhaps I am a bit biased, but I can confidently say that AEA is the undisputed global leader in aquatic fitness education. I have said it before and I will say it again, the most educated instructors are the best instructors. And the best instructors invariably pack the pool, generating higher revenues for themselves and their facilities.

Recently, I reached out to a few “super hosts,” those who host AEA events regularly. In their comments below they share the impact that hosting an AEA event has had on their facility and staff.

I have hosted two trainings so far and I can see a difference in my staff. Our facility has the most highly qualified staff in the area. My instructors are teaching better classes and the class sizes have continued to grow. Since hosting AEA events, class averages have jumped from 4-6 participants to 16-18 participants. I highly recommend hosting an event! There are so many additional benefits, such as the ability to purchase equipment at a huge discount, event comps for your staff and, perhaps the greatest benefit, some additional brainstorming opportunities with the AEA trainer. The trainers are awesome, come willing to share their knowledge and, depending on the group, really customize the training to make sure everyone gets the most out of the workshops.
Craig Yaniglos, Aquatic Director
Hubbard Community Pool, Hubbard, OH

To help us keep it fresh and new, we look to our AEA family. We host a certification and a workshop every two years. We close the pool for two days and just enjoy learning new techniques, choreography and sometimes a new approach to some old moves. We strive to have all our water aerobic instructors AEA certified and we travel together as a group to visit other facilities for workshops. We love hosting because it allows us to get the benefit of training at our home pool, and it also helps with the budget because of the free perks that come along with hosting.
Debbie Pelen, Aquatic Director
Hempfield Rec Center, Landisville, PA

We appreciate the high caliber of instructors that have led the events we have hosted. For the last two years, Terri Mitchell has been the instructor and she is excellent. This year Laurie Denomme joined her for a one-day AquaStretch Foundations™ course that was very well received. Our fitness specialist that took the class couldn’t wait to share all the new knowledge he received! AEA sets a very high standard and we appreciate this. It’s also very convenient for our instructors to have a local certification and continuing education offered. This was my first year coordinating the event and I found everyone very easy to work with. Communication was clear at all levels! We have three days set on the calendar for December 2013 and look forward to another successful event!
Christine Holmes, Group Exercise Coordinator
NorthPointe Wellness, Roscoe, IL

One of the main benefits from hosting an event is that it enables our instructors to reenergize and recharge. It provides them an opportunity to be exposed to innovative aquatic programming and to network with other instructors in the comfort of their own facility. At the most recent event we hosted, the interactive portion of the workshops allowed for instructors to share their creative designs and techniques. We had a room full of instructors brainstorming programming together. In addition to educating our staff, hosting workshops allows our patrons to see new, exciting aquatic programming. It increases their awareness of the importance of aquatic exercise in everyday life. If I were able to host an event every year, I would make my instructors and those instructors in the region extremely happy.
Anne Dolan, Facility Manager
Cranford Pool and Fitness Center, Cranford, NJ

We want our staff to be recognized for having national instructor credentials, as well as continuing education on current trends in the water fitness and exercise industry. By hosting training events, we make it more accessible and in some cases can make it more feasible (cost wise) for our staff to participate. Our instructors are always motivated and energized from attending workshops because they learn new ways to create and present their classes. They get to learn from inspiring, enthusiastic presenters and they get to network and share experiences with fellow fitness professionals. When we are able to host an AEA event, our center and our customers see that we do value the ongoing education for our instructors, and that we are interested in improving and adding to the fitness programming we offer.
Larissa Doty, District Aquatic Coordinator
Dishman Pool, Portland Parks and Recreation, Portland Oregon

I would like to say that it has been great to bring some quality training to the Midwest. I have noticed in my instructors a greater sense of pride and professionalism. I have also noticed an increase in the participants of the aquatic fitness classes that we offer.
LeAnn Auxier, Aquatics Programmer/Scheduler
Urbandale City Swimming Pool, Urbandale, IA 50322

UH2O Underwater Gym
You gotta see this!

In October 2011, the Randolph YMCA in Randolph, NJ added three underwater treadmills and transformed their pools by creating a boot camp class that utilized the treadmills and a variety of other equipment. “This class has finally attracted ‘land athletes’ into our pools and has made them understand the benefits of adding aquatic fitness into their current training routine,” says Kathy Fisher, Aquatic Director at the Randolph Y. In the upcoming February/March issue of AKWA Magazine, look for an article from Kathy Fisher detailing the specifics and success of UH2O Underwater Gym in her facility.

In the meantime, check out the YouTube clip below. Watching a new generation enjoying an athletic workout in the pool will put a smile on your face. We have come a long way.

Cheers to making more strides forward in 2013!
