IAFC 2012: GET OUT OF THE POOL AND INTO THE CLASSROOM!
If you have never attended IAFC, but have viewed some of the clips, including Troy’s latest, you may think that all of the action is in the pool. That is simply not the case. Ask any IAFC veteran - some of the best ideas, concepts and inspiration can be found in the classroom. Many of the sessions at IAFC are solely dedicated to “DRY” aquatic education, as well as theory, research, nutrition, leadership and more.
Dry Dock sessions, land fitness workshops, master classes, lectures and even cooking classes will allow IAFC 2012 participants to diversify their conference experience and broaden their educational horizons.
If you are attending for your first time, or perhaps haven’t attended in a while, don’t make the mistake of choosing all pool sessions as you will exhaust yourself and limit your ability to retain the information you are learning. Ask any IAFC veteran – the most invigorating session selection schedule is one that combines pool with classroom-only sessions.
The 2012 IAFC schedule includes classroom-only or land fitness activities in every time block with the exception of Tuesday. Not sure what to pick? Well, any lecture with Dr. Len Kravitz is bound to be a winner according to past IAFC evaluations. Len has four sessions on the schedule this year. However, Len also has some stiff competition as some of the grandest dames of the industry are delivering “can’t miss” lectures this year, including Pauline Ivens, Connie Jasinskas, Sara Kooperman, Ruth Sova, Sandy Stoub and more. Looking to explore some land fitness master classes? Monique Acton, Julie See, Stephanie Thielen, Triple Delight, Power Systems, Zumba and others will keep the aqua enthusiasts breaking a sweat indoors.
The 2012 IAFC Dry Dock series includes an exciting selection of aquatic fitness education and practical applications taught by some of the world’s most talented instructors, including European dynamos, Katrien Lemahieu, Silvia Senati and Tinoca Senra.
And for the record, I am looking forward to teaching my Dry Dock ‘game show’ session, Name That Move, which is a sequel to last year’s Name That Muscle. Last year, I gave out gigantic dill pickles and bags of Animal Crackers for prizes. The prizes this year are a secret!
Come join a stellar line-up of presenters in the classroom at IAFC this year!
Already registered? No worries! You can modify your registration to include them.

WEEKEND EVENTS: SHOUT OUT TO BOOT CAMP IN BELLEVUE!
On February 26, AEA’s newest program, Boot Camp Shallow, was debuted in Bellevue, WA, with a sold-out attendance. Aquatic boot camp formats have become very popular as facilities try to showcase more aggressive water fitness programming to attract a wider audience to the pool. Boot camp formats, including AEA’s new workshop, usually consist of circuit and/or interval programming combining both cardio, strength, agility and skill in a class that often features equipment use.
AEA Trainer, Lori Sherlock, who taught all of the sessions in Bellevue, says that the newly created AEA Boot Camp Shallow program provided the attendees with some fresh ideas and an innovative approach to shallow water aquatic fitness. “I think that the group seemed very excited that this type of training is modifiable for so many populations and thus could reach the full spectrum of the clientele that they serve. And it is SO much fun! The combination of the challenging workouts, partner work and the attitude of the instructor provide a recipe for a great aquatic fitness class.”
AEA supporter and founder of Aquatics and More, Robin Davis, says that the participants received valuable information that they could take back to their classes. “I heard a lot of good feedback, including, ‘I can use this is my class,’ ‘I love the new moves,’ and ‘I can’t wait to try this when I get home.' The conversations I overheard buzzed about the information they learned regarding how to put together a boot camp class and all of the marketing possibilities by doing so.”
Would you like to bring AEA’s Boot Camp Shallow to your facility? Email AEA for hosting information to

Stay tuned for an upcoming feature article in E-News about Aqua Boot Camp and the various ways AEA certified instructors are introducing Boot Camp into the pool.

MEET AN IAFC PRESENTER:
Vanina Delfino has been presenting at IAFC since 2010 and is quickly becoming a favorite international presenter. From Buenos Aires, Argentina, she is a recognized presenter in swimming and aquatic activities in South America and the USA and is the managing operator of ACQUAMAR an aquatic education center in Buenos Aires. She is the owner of AcquaSwym, an enterprise dedicated to aquatic education solutions. Vanina specializes in aquatic programming for seniors, children and infants and is certified by Speedo, AEA, Watsu, Halliwick and Bad Ragaz.
Since 2009, she has been presenting WaterCYCling, an aquatic cycling program. In fact, at IAFC 2012 she will be teaching, WaterCYCling Functional Training, a session that she says will allow participants to experiment with different approaches to water pedaling. “In this session we will reinforce core muscle control, as well as coordinating movements in all three movement planes, imitating movements of daily life. We will perform cycling choreography to the rhythm of music, kind of like ‘dance pedaling.’ In this class you will move your whole body and forget that you are even pedaling!”
Vanina will also be co-presenting a session with two other presenters from Argentina, Claudia Contreras and Fernando Villaverde. According to Vanina, Hidro Latin TriMax, will provide instructors with training tools to use the water in an integral way while strengthening muscles groups with maximum effort. “Instructors will develop strategies to work with larger groups using limited equipment. Claudia, Fernando and I will motivate participants to work harder and enthusiastically to the rhythm of the music. Get ready to wake up your Latin soul.”
Vanina has been attending IAFC for the past five years and she says she is now addicted. “My first time was in 2006 and I was fascinated at taking part in the world’s most important aquatic fitness event.” So fascinated that she says she attended every session in the pool and that Troy has pictures to prove it. “At the end of the week I was really ‘water tired,’ but I met people from all over the world with the same passion and love for aquatics that I had. I promised myself to be part of the convention for the next few years.” She indeed kept coming to the conference and by 2010 she was selected to be a presenter. “It is an honor for me to represent my country with our particular style in aquatics. However, even if I wasn’t presenting I would still attend IAFC because I now feel like I am part of an aquatic world family. During the IAFC week we share sun, water, different training styles, knowledge and all of our aquatic soul.”
Look for Vanina’s sessions at the following times:
WaterCYCLING Functional Training: Wednesday, May 16, 2:00pm-2:45pm
Hidro Latin TriMax (co-presenting): Friday, May 18, 7:45am-9:30am
